Hello October

Summer was a blur, yet Autumn is buzzing by even quicker. While I do love the colors, I struggle with it getting dark so early! Evenings in the garden are so peaceful and now they are 2 hours shorter! Chilly mornings mean I am not in a hurry to get out in the gardens early. Yes I am slowing down too. Days are busy with harvesting for orders. For cutting and drying everlasting bouquets as well as garden cleanup- which right now is a bit overwhelming. Some days all I work on is orders and that is fine by me! This past week included watering the dahlias. Quite crazy that we are actually on the dry side when so much of our country is not. How fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful area.

We have had an incredible run of good weather. Please remind me of that , this winter when I am moaning about the weather. Although that is when the dream begins again. The first seedlings are started as we dream of blue skies, sunshine and lush gardens of color. Plantings are based on pre-booked weddings, events and CSA’s .Yes there are the standards such as zinnias , dahlias, snapdragons, eucalyptus etc…This year's top colors included corals, oranges and hot pinks, along with fall tones and classic whites.

Fall has once again turned into extended summer. Summer flowers are still quite colorful and plentiful- so pails and pails of flowers are still available. This week I will be cutting for several DIY customers, plenty of options available this month. If you are interested reach out for more info. Other options include custom bouquets or arrangements, sympathy flowers or wedding or event flowers. October is the final hurrah for the dahlias- and they are lush and magnificent.

I am impatiently waiting for the next crop to open- the heirloom mums ..... they will be our next focal flower hopefully into November. Eucalyptus , mint and scented geraniums will fill out the mum bouquets- because I love fragrance in my bouquets! Snapdragon production has picked up again as they love the cooler temperature also.

For all my CSA members if you would like to stroll the gardens, especially the dahlias when you pick up in October reach out and we can try to schedule that with your pick up! One of the CSA perks- that and getting the best and freshest from the gardens cut especially for you!

Hope you are enjoying my flower obsession and the journey of locally grown flowers, feel free to share my info and help spread the word.

Love and flowers, Brenda/ Westside Gardens

PS I am setting up at Running's Ladies night Wednesday Oct 9 stop and say Hi!
